Paul Burnett
Paul Burnett is recognized
as one of America's leading leather artists and was so honored by being the
first recipient of the prestigious Al Stohlman Award for Achievement in the
field of leather arts. He has written and published several leather craft books
and is the author and administrator of his own correspondence course in leather
carving and coloring. He has been a consistent contributor to the leading leather
craft magazines over the past twenty five years. A frequent lecturer and demonstrator,
his techniques and artistry are admired and followed by leather craftsmen the
world over.
Paul Burnett's jewelry
(pins and earrings) is made of high quality top grain vegetable tanned leather.
A master feather is tooled by Paul in leather, then a plate is made of that
feather in order to reproduce exact copies in leather. Once the impression is
made, they are then cut out and worked by hand; the edges are thinned to a feather
edge with a skiving tool then the fluffs and splits are cut-in with a x-acto
knife. They are painted with acrylic paints to represent the real feather. Some
of the feathers are painted using light interference colors in order to duplicate
the changing iridescence often found in real feathers. Once the paint is dry,
the feather is shaped and the appropriate findings are attached.
